The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Thompson Class L1 was a class of 2-6-4T steam locomotives designed by Edward Thompson. The prototype no. 9000 was built in 1945, but the remaining 99 were built under British Railways jurisdiction between 1948–1950.

Thirty of these new L1 locomotives were authorised in April 1944, and the first locomotive (No. 9000) was completed in May 1945. This was the only tank engine built by the LNER that was painted in lined apple-green livery.

Classified 1B by the GCR, the LNER assigned class L1, which was altered to L3 in May 1945, because the Thompson Class L1 were about to appear. [12] All were renumbered to 9050–9069 by the LNER during 1946; [13] and, of the 19 which passed to British Railways, eleven were renumbered into the 69050–69069 block between 1948 and 1950. [14]

The Great Central Railway (GCR) tried this with their Class 1B 2-6-4T (LNER L1 locomotives). These were also the first 2-6-4T locomotives to enter service in Britain. Robinson based the L1 design on the M1 0-6-4T locomotives.

The LNER 2-6-4 Tank Locomotives. For various reasons, the LNER did not have many 2-6-4T locomotives until Thompson introduced his L1 as a part of his standardisation plan. The LNER inherited 2-6-4Ts from the Great Central Railway (GCR) and London Transport (ex-Metropolitan Railway), but never built any more of these designs.
