2023年11月10日 · Five of the seven species of sea turtles live in Hawaii. The species found here include green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, and olive ridley. Females come ashore to lay eggs, usually on the same beach where they hatched. They lay roughly 100-200 eggs in each of 3-7 different nest sites.

The largest of all hard-shelled sea turtles, the Green Sea Turtle is named not for their shell color appearance, but for the color of their fat and cartilage. Honu are considered “sea cows” as they graze on limu, seagrass, and invertebrates along coral reefs and rocky shorelines.

Hawaiian green sea turtles, or honu, are native to Hawaiʻi. They are the largest hard-shelled sea turtle in the world, reaching lengths of four feet and weighing over 300 pounds. Out of the seven types of sea turtle, the Hawaiian green sea turtle is the most common in Hawaiian waters.

As indigenous species in Hawai'i, sea turtles play an important role in Hawaiian cultural traditions and mo'olelo (stories). The honu (green turtle) and 'ea (hawksbill turtle) are mentioned in the fourth verse of the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant.
