GHCNd is made up of daily climate records from numerous sources that have been integrated and subjected to a common suite of quality assurance reviews. GHCNd contains records from more than 100,000 stations in 180 countries and territories.

NCEI uses GHCN monthly to monitor long-term trends in temperature and precipitation.

The GHCNd was developed to meet the needs of climate analysis and monitoring studies that require data at a sub-monthly time resolution (e.g., assessments of the frequency of heavy rainfall, heat wave duration, etc.).

The Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN) is a data set of temperature, precipitation and pressure records managed by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), Arizona State University and the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center. Since 2015 the CHCN is being managed by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).

Global Historical Climatology Network - Daily is a dataset from NOAA that contains daily observations over global land areas. It contains station-based measurements from land-based stations worldwide, about two thirds of which are for precipitation measurement only.
