Steeped in history, the Town takes its name from a colonial-era fort built by the British and a grist mill on nearby Steele Creek. The Catawba Indians made their home here for many years. Scotch-Irish settlers began arriving in the 1750s and 1760s and a small settlement soon developed.

The Town of Fort Mill (established 1873) is located just south of the state line shared with North Carolina. Our closest neighbors are Rock Hill, SC, to the south and Charlotte, NC, to the north. Approximately 12,000 people live inside the Town's corporate limits with a total of nearly 50,000 people residing within the entire Township.

Join the Town of Fort Mill as we celebrate our Nation’s 248th birthday with food, fireworks and fun at our Independence Day Celebration on Wednesday, July 3, 2024! This free event will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Fort Mill Amphitheater and Walter Elisha Park, 345 N. White St.

The annual pageants kicked off Fort Mill’s SC Strawberry Festival month of events, which will culminate on May 4, 2024 with the 15th Annual SC Strawberry Festival. Up first to face the four-judge panel were 45 Little Miss contestants who competed with both fun and formal outfits.

Effective July 1, 2020, the Fort Mill Town Council adopted the following discount rates in the impact fee ordinance: parks and recreation (10%), fire protection (10%), and municipal facilities and equipment (10%).

The Criminal Investigations Division is responsible for the comprehensive follow-up investigation of criminal offenses occurring within the Town limits of Fort Mill, South Carolina. This includes identifying, apprehending, and assisting in the prosecution of criminal offenders.
