The Colt Model 1848 Percussion Army Revolver is a .44 caliber revolver designed by Samuel Colt for the U.S. Army's Regiment of Mounted Rifles. The revolver was also issued to the Army's "Dragoon" regiments. This revolver was designed as a solution to numerous problems encountered with the Colt Walker.

Dragoon revolvers evolved as improvements on the Colt Walker. Eli Whitney manufactured the first run of 1848 Dragoons for Samuel Colt. The Dragoon revolvers weighed less and had shorter cylinders and improved loading levers.

The way to discern between the three versions of Colt Dragoon .44s is by their trigger guards and bolt locking notches in the cylinder. This 1st Model Dragoon has a square back trigger guard and oval bolt locking notches.
