A brine pool, sometimes called an underwater lake, deepwater or brine lake, is a volume of brine collected in a seafloor depression. These pools are dense bodies of water that have a salinity that is typically three to eight times greater than the surrounding ocean.

Brine Lakes. It seems like an impossibility—coming across a lake at the bottom of the ocean. But due to chemical and physical properties of water, this is, in fact, a reality. Brine lakes are super salty pools of water that sit on the ocean floor.

A hypersaline lake is a landlocked body of water that contains significant concentrations of sodium chloride, brines, and other salts, with saline levels surpassing those of ocean water (3.5%, i.e. 35 grams per litre or 0.29 pounds per US gallon).

As we moved closer, it became clear that we were observing a brine lake, with a well-defined interface between the dense lake water and the overlying seawater. The brine was probably derived from solution of a shallow salt body at the core of the overall mound.

These brine lakes are known as DHAL (deeps hypersaline anoxic lake) or DHAB (deeps hypersaline anoxic basin) deposits. They occur in salt allochthon regions on the deep seafloors of the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
