2022年7月9日 · Each June, biologists from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Fisheries Unit study the endangered adult Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) when the fish return to the Hudson River to spawn.
Atlantic sturgeon can be found in major estuaries and river systems from Canada to Florida. While still found generally throughout their historical range, Atlantic sturgeon spawning is known to occur in only 22 of 38 historical spawning rivers.
Atlantic sturgeon are easily distinguished from most other fish species within their range because of their relatively large size, visible bony scutes, protruding snout, and heterocercal tail.
Atlantic sturgeon are found along the east coast of North America, from southern Canada to northern Florida. They spend most of their adult life in the ocean migrating into coastal estuaries and rivers to spawn in spring and fall. They can occur in small groups or alone.
Atlantic Sturgeon aggregations and migration routes along the coast of Long Island overlap with commercial fishing activities that may lead to incidental take in nondirected fisheries.
