Shneur Zalman of Liadi, (Hebrew: שניאור זלמן מליאדי; September 4, 1745 – December 15, 1812 O.S. / 18 Elul 5505 – 24 Tevet 5573) commonly known as the Alter Rebbe or Baal Hatanya, was a rabbi and the founder and first Rebbe of Chabad, a branch of Hasidic Judaism.

Known as the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman lived in an era of change and unrest on a global scale. Yet his life continues to inspire, and his works and teachings have long withstood the test of time.

One of the greatest of the outstanding Chassidic personalities was Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, later famous as the Rav (teacher). This saintly man became the founder of Chabad Chassidism, a movement which developed into one of the strongest and most dynamic branches of Chassidism.

Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (18 Elul 1745-24 Tevet 1812), known as "the Alter Rebbe," was one of the main disciples of the Maggid of Mezritch, and the founder of the Chabad Chassidism. He is the author of Shulchan Aruch HaRav and Tanya as well as many other major works in both Jewish law and the mystical teachings.

24th Teves (24 January in 20’25) is the yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) of the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman. On 19 (Yud-Tes) Kislev (20 December in 20’24) he was miraculously redeemed from imprisonment on slanderous charges in Russia. He was the founder of the Chabad Chassidic movement.
