Young “activists” violently broke up Opposition meetings with methods reminiscent of Mussolini’s Fascist squads. Stalin, wielding his power like a club, expelled Trotsky and his followers from the party in late 1927. Prophetically, Trotsky denounced Stalin as the “gravedigger of the Revolution.”

Stalinism and Trotskyism are two distinct ideologies that emerged within the Soviet Union during the early 20th century. Stalinism, named after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, emphasized centralized control, authoritarianism, and the implementation of a command economy.
