Kangaroo (armoured personnel carrier) - Wikipedia
A Kangaroo was a Canadian armoured personnel carrier (APC) during the Second World War which was created by converting a tank chassis. Kangaroos were created as an expedient measure "in the field" by the Canadian Army, and were so successful that they were used by other Commonwealth forces, including the British Army.

For the M4 Sherman Kangaroo, the conversion process was relatively simple. Canadian mechanic crews took the turret off a Sherman and welded a plate behind the driver compartment. Then the ammunition storage was removed.

2021年8月6日 · The Kangaroo APCs were used until the end of the Second World War, notably during the campaigns in the Netherlands (see Liberation of the Netherlands) and Germany (see Battle of the Rhineland). The Kangaroo APCs used in Italy (see Canada and the Italian Campaign) were converted Sherman tanks.

When the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division was re-equipped with towed 25-pounder field guns in late July, the rest of their self-propelled tracked vehicles were stripped of their 105-mm guns and converted to Kangaroos. Later Kangaroos were based on Sherman, Churchill, and obsolete Canadian Ram tanks.

The second source was digged up from the Bovington Tank Museum's archives by Peter Brown. He notes that "it throws some light on the use and conversion of Kangaroos in Italy.

The curator agreed that its was an ideal and fitting use for the AFV, so he raised no objections and the title to the Ram Kangaroo was permanently transferred to the Sherman Register. The photo shows the Kangaroo being loaded at Bovington on the 5th of February 1993.

During and after WW2 Priests, Rams and Shermans were converted into Kangaroos, makeshift APCs. The use in Europe during WW2 is documented, but what happened elsewhere and after the war deserves more attention. NW Europe was the breeding ground of the Kangaroo. Introduced in Normandy, their use contributed considerably to the Allied victory.
