Humans interact with computers in many ways, and the interface between the two is crucial to facilitating this interaction. HCI is also sometimes termed human–machine interaction (HMI), man-machine interaction (MMI) or computer-human interaction (CHI).

Human-machine interaction is all about how people and automated systems interact with each other. HMI now plays a major role in industry and everyday life: More and more devices are connected and automatically carry out tasks.

Human Machine Interaction (HMI) is the study of the interaction between humans and machines, and how these interactions can be optimized to create more intuitive, efficient, and effective interfaces. HMI encompasses a wide range of technologies and disciplines, including computer science, engineering, psychology, and design.

This chapter introduces basic principles of human-machine interfaces and human- machine interactions, including issues of levels of autonomy, teaming, human per- formance enhancement, and shared control between machine and human operator.

From the human perspective, human–machine interaction will be more lifelike and attractive if machines are able to recognize human emotions and respond accordingly. Recognition of the user's expressed emotion can improve the reliability of communication in dialogue.
