The GSTP1 gene, encoding the pi class glutathione S-transferase, was the first hypermethylated gene to be characterized in prostate cancer. GSTP1 is thought to protect prostate epithelial cells from carcinogen-associated and\or oxidative stress-induced DNA damage, and loss of GSTP1 may render prostate cells unprotected from such genomic insults.
