Dark matter - Wikipedia
In astronomy, dark matter is an invisible and hypothetical form of matter that does not interact with light or other electromagnetic radiation. Dark matter is implied by gravitational effects which cannot be explained by general relativity unless more matter is present than can be observed.
Dark matter | Definition, Discovery, Distribution, & Facts - Britannica
2024年12月18日 · dark matter, a component of the universe whose presence is discerned from its gravitational attraction rather than its luminosity. Dark matter makes up 30.1 percent of the matter -energy composition of the universe; the rest is dark energy (69.4 percent) and “ordinary” visible matter (0.5 percent).
Dark Matter & Dark Energy - Science@NASA
2024年5月8日 · Dark matter and dark energy are mysterious substances that affect and shape the cosmos, and scientists are still trying to figure them out. While normal matter is everywhere in our daily lives, it composes less than 5% of the total universe.
Dark Energy and Dark Matter | Center for Astrophysics | Harvard ...
Dark matter makes up most of the mass of galaxies and galaxy clusters, and is responsible for the way galaxies are organized on grand scales. Dark energy, meanwhile, is the name we give the mysterious influence driving the accelerated expansion of the universe.
What Is Dark Matter? | NASA Space Place – NASA Science for Kids
2025年1月14日 · Dark matter is that invisible glue that keeps stars, dust, and gas together in a galaxy. This mysterious substance makes up the majority of a galaxy's mass and forms the foundation of our Universe's structure. Dark matter is still one of the greatest mysteries of science. Dark matter - CERN
Dark matter candidates arise frequently in theories that suggest physics beyond the Standard Model, such as supersymmetry and extra dimensions. One theory suggests the existence of a “Hidden Valley”, a parallel world made of dark matter having very little in …
Science 101: Dark Matter and Dark Energy - Argonne National …
What are dark matter and dark energy? There’s something amiss in the cosmos. Mysterious influences seem to be stretching the universe apart and clumping stuff together in unexpected ways, but we can’t see or touch them. Scientists call …
Dark matter: evidence, theory and constraints – CERN Courier
2025年1月24日 · Dark-matter research spans a very broad range of topics and methods. This makes it a challenging research field to enter and master. Dark Matter: Evidence, Theory and Constraints by David Marsh, David Ellis and Viraf Mehta, the latest addition to the Princeton Series in Astrophysics, clearly presents the relevant essentials of all of these areas.
What Is Dark Matter, and Where Is it Hiding? - Caltech Magazine
2020年10月23日 · It is … dark. But if we cannot see dark matter, how do scientists know it is there? The answer is gravity. Astronomers indirectly detect dark matter through its gravitational influences on stars and galaxies. Wherever normal matter resides, dark matter can be found lurking unseen by its side.
Hidden Matter: The Lambda CDM Model of Our Universe
2024年9月23日 · Dark matter is a theorized invisible substance that fills in these gaps, and it’s discussed extensively in the Lambda Cold Dark Matter Model (ΛCDM for short) model. With new theories and models for cosmological events appearing every day, the ΛCDM is one of the most well-standing and respected theories.
