The modified aircraft, designated XB-44 Superfortress, first flew in May 1945. [3] [4] The planned Wasp-Major powered bomber, the B-29D, was to incorporate considerable changes in addition to the engine installation tested in the XB-44.

The XB-44 was the testbed designation for the D model. When World War II ended, the B-29D was given the quartet of Wasp Major engines to become the B-50 , which served throughout the 1950s in the U.S. bomber fleet.

The Boeing XB-44 Superfortress was a United States B-29 Superfortress bomber aircraft upgraded with Pratt & Whitney R-4360-33 Wasp Major radial engines of 3000 horsepower takeoff rating, in place of the production engines rated at 2200 hp takeoff rating.

The XB-44 was a B-29 fitted with larger Pratt & Whitney engines. The plane flew 50-60 mph faster than the B-29; however the XB-44 was designated the B-29D instead. Since Boeing engineers had modified the B-29 extensively the plane was redesignated the B-50, becoming the B-50A. A predecessor to the more powerful turbo-engine version.

The XB-44 (XB-29D) was a modified B-29A with new, more powerful engines and redesigned engine nacelles with the oil cooler intake set further back. The aircraft was a prototype for the next production model of the B-29 Superfortress, the B-29D.
