The protein complex binds to DNA and displays numerous enzymatic activities that are required for nonhomologous joining of DNA ends.

The SMC family member Rad50, in complex with Mre11 and Nbs1, is a required component of DSB repair. Here we introduce the DNA repair functions of Rad50-containing complexes and compare their architecture with the SMC complexes cohesin and condensin. ATP binding and hydrolysis are important for all of these protein complexes.
