For more than 100 years, Phoebe was Saturn's outermost known moon, until the discovery of several smaller moons in 2000. Phoebe is almost 4 times more distant from Saturn than its nearest major neighbor (Iapetus), and is substantially larger than any of the other moons orbiting planets at comparable distances.

The dark moon Phoebe is the most studied irregular moon of Saturn. It has a mysterious origin as it may be an object from the Kuiper belt that got captured by Saturn’s gravity. Measuring roughly 213 km (132 miles) across, it is the largest irregular moon in the Saturnian system.

On August 16, 1898, DeLisle Stewart, an employee of the Arequipa Observatory, took a photograph of Saturn. Unbeknownst to him, this image captured an unknown moon of the planet, which would later be named Phoebe.

Phoebe is one of the most interesting moons that orbits the planet Saturn. It orbits it at a very far distance – the furthest out of any of the major moons of Saturn. For many years it was thought that Phoebe was a stray asteroid that somehow made it’s was into Saturn’s gravitational pull.

On June 11, 2004, Cassini passed Phoebe, the largest of Saturn's outer or "irregular" moons, at an altitude of just 1,285 miles (2,068 kilometers). This was the sole close flyby of one of the outer moons of Saturn in the entire Cassini mission.
