Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) is the largest coal mining company and Independent Power Producer in Zambia. It is a subsidiary of Nava Bharat (Singapore) Pte. Limited which holds a majority equity stake.

Maamba is a town located in Sinazongwe District in the Southern Province, Zambia. It is about 35 kilometres south-west of Sinazeze and about 250 km south-west of the capital city of Zambia, Lusaka .

Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) is one of Zambia’s largest Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and operates Zambia’s largest coal mining concession. MEL operates a 300MW thermal power plant at mine-mouth at Maamba.

Maamba Energy Ltd (formerly Maamba Collieries Ltd) was incorporated in Zambia in 1971. The company commenced operations at the open cast mine soon after and as the economy of the nation grew on attaining independence in 1964, so too did the demand for coal – pushing the mine’s production to its limit.
