This flag is reputed to have been used in the Indian Wars. The United States often presented flags, sometimes called "Indian Peace Flags" to friendly Indian nations. These flags featured a coat-of-arms including the image of an eagle in their cantons.

Five of these Indian Peace Flags supposedly still exist. At the time of the Louisiana Purchase, loyalties of the native tribes were split between the United States, Britain and Spain. One task of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was to establish peace with the people of the new territory.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition carried several flags. Some represented the United States at that time, some were admiral flags for boats, and others were designed as gifts for Indians.

One unusual variation of the U.S. flag was a 26 star flag carried by western explorer John C. Frémont, who later became the first "Indian Peace" flag of 1803 - The U.S. government often presented the Stars and Stripes to friendly Indian nations.

2022年8月11日 · Explorers were sent with manufactured goods and symbols of their (supposedly) peaceful intentions. Among those were the 1803 Peace Flags that, along with peace medals and "commissions," written treaties between the government of the United States and the Native tribes they encountered along the way.

2019年8月4日 · It’s a Presidential Indian Peace Flag and could be the only existing flag of some 40 flags hand-sewn centuries ago, possibly between the late 1700s to the early 1800s. In addition, according to the Smithsonian in Wash. D.C., they theorized it could possibly be the oldest flag in existence today.
