A revised Annex IV was adopted on 1 April 2004 and entered into force on 1 August 2005. The revised Annex applies to ships, engaged in international voyages, of 400 gross tonnage and above or which are certified to carry more than 15 persons.

Annex IV applies to all ships over 400 gross tons engaged in international voyages or to ships less than 400 gross tons certified to carry more than 15 persons. The Annex requires the installation of holding tanks or approved sewage treatment devices.

Annex VI Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships establishes certain sulphur oxide (SOx) Emission Control Areas with more stringent controls on sulphur emissions and nitrogen oxides (NOx) Emission Control Areas for Tier III NOx emission standards.
