The Douglas A-26 Invader (designated B-26 between 1948 and 1965) is an American twin-engined light bomber and ground attack aircraft. Built by Douglas Aircraft Company during World War II, the Invader also saw service during several major Cold War conflicts.

After World War II, the Invader served in Korea and Vietnam, making it the only American bomber to fly missions in three wars. The Invader was designed to meet a 1940 US Army Air Corps (USAAC) requirement for multi-role light bomber for low-level and medium-altitude for precision bombing attacks, with heavy defensive armament.

Perhaps better known for its post war exploits, the Douglas A-26 Invader first served in the European and Pacific theatres of World War II from September 1944. Designed by ED Heinemann to replace the A-20 Havoc, the A-26 was very similar to the Havoc in configuration.

2021年7月23日 · The Douglas A-26 Invader was a distinguished twin-engine light bomber whose origins were well-placed in the Second World War. The system proved adept at day and night flying, attacking targets with a bevy of machine guns or drop bombs and operating at low and medium altitudes with equal success.

The first operation of the A-26 was on 6 September, with 18 Invaders conducting an attack on Brest in France. The Invader was faster than the A-20 Havoc, while the range and bomb load were greater, with the type gradually displacing the A-20 and B-26 Marauder.

After World War II, it served as a front-line bomber during the Korean War and in the beginning of the the Vietnam War. The A-26, the last aircraft designated as an 'attack bomber', was designed to replace the Douglas A-20 'Havoc/Boston'. It incorporated many improvements over the earlier Douglas designs.
