The image of nearby galaxy Messier 81 was captured by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. The galaxy is located in the northern constellation of Ursa Major (which also includes the Big Dipper).
If its gaseous halo could be seen with the naked eye, it would be about three times the width of the Big Dipper--easily the biggest feature on the nighttime sky.
