Preparations are now in progress for the speedy dispatch of the vessels which are to form a part of the expedition to the Isthmus of Darien, hence the workmen at the Navy Yard are being quite busy.

Thirty years later, the Kingdom of Scotland launched the Darien scheme, financing an overland route across the isthmus. It failed. Spanish and British initiatives to build a canal never got far.
