I think it’s because signatures are supposed to be in cursive, or else they don’t count ... Or maybe it was that regardless, eventually you got to use a pen instead of a pencil.

By hand, they wrote in cursive using a digital pen on a touchscreen. Typing involved using a single finger to press the keys.
