The trees, which date back almost 6000 years, were found 600 feet (183 metres) above the current tree line on the Beartooth mountains ... grow much lower down the mountain now.

If you're visiting when Beartooth Highway is closed, you can instead enjoy the slopes at Red Lodge Mountain. The ski resort is typically open from late November through the middle of April.
