You can’t really avoid the river crossing and get views of the falls. The main trail that the signs lead you up starts on the left side of the river, crosses the river at the log, and then proceeds steeply up the right side of the river with great views near the falls. You can go up the far left side by taking a left turn up a gravel tract not far past the parking lot. But you can’t see much from that side.
When does the log across the river normally get placed? I will be in Iceland at the end of May (arriving 29th) and hoping to do this hike!

I would expect that the log will be across by now but if it is still snowing there, then it may not. There don't have a specific time when they place it across the river because the weather in Iceland is rather unpredictable... Make sure to bring sturdy hiking boots, an extra pair of socks, and a bottle of water... and your camera
