If you go down Lawton drive I think there are signs that direct you to the preserve but you get on lawton/canal road. Drive past the South Island water process plant and you will come to fish island trail. Again I think there are signs. This road is gravel/sand and you can drive to a little picnic area and dock area over fish island. There are parking areas for about 6 cars. In the summer lost of mosquitos. But most of the trails you can only get to by foot or horse. But tons of nature. I’ve seen deer, snakes, turtles, and alligators.
Is the path that runs through the preserve all wooden like the boardwalk or does it change to a regular path on actual ground? I ask because I am petrified of snakes but would really like to enjoy this hike for an upcoming spiritual day retreat. I do not mind seeing a snake at a distance but do NOT want to encounter one close up. Thank you!

It does turn to asphalt when on solid ground. In a few areas it’s actually just a well worn path. I’ve never seen a snake on it. Nor has my wife and she has snake radar.

So my Dad has a motorized scooter. Yes we took him along the walking trail when it was dry. However, parts were bumpy due to the tree roots and such. It is possible to take someone in a wheelchair but it truly depends on that individuals tolerance for a bit of a bumpy ride, and also the person pushing the chair. If you want to get them back closer to the shell ring area, wildflowers, and ponds there is a road that goes back to those areas with parking that is closer.
