I am planning to visit SLC in late summer. Are the Salt Flats too far? Can someone walk on them or are they slushy? How far is the parking? Is it wheelchair accessible? Is there an entrance fee or parking fee? Is it a safe drive to this place with plenty of rest stops and food/ gas places along the way? Would it be possible to go to this place and return to SLC in one day? Is this place up on an incline or down in a valley? Anything else I need to know? Thank you so much in advance!

There is a rest area close to the Wendover (west end) of the flats. That's about 120 miles from Salt Lake. The surface is sometimes hard and dry and mushy just below the surface at others depending on rain. I don't recommend driving on it but there will be tire tracks from people who did. Use good judgment. Leave SLC with a full tank of fuel, there's plenty of gas stations and restaurants at Wendover. It's a nice day trip if you like deserts. I've been across the salt many times with motorcycles and cars always enjoying the ride.

While the speedway was open, they only allowed the racing participants on the speedway, for a fee. If you go on the Interstate 80 west bound rest area, you can drive on the salt flats for no fee. But they do not give you a readout of your maximum speed you have to do that part.

Does anyone know of any hot rod events during speed week?! We’ve seen pictures of a gathering of them out on the flats, but I can’t find any dates, or if it’s just a impromptu event that happens the week of the races! We’re not interested in racing, just want to take our hot rod out to play!!
