You could ask at the resort if there are any custom tour options that bring you to the lake and come collect you after the amount of time you want to spend there

Hi - Are there any options for half day trips, or transport from the resort to Lake McKenzie or any other sites? We are wanting to stay a couple of days on Fraser Island (not on a tour as we would get the ferry and accommodation ourselves) and just see some of the sights without having to spend several hundred dollars hiring a 4WD from Hervey Bay?

I'm not so sure they do half day trips, but I could be wrong, as there is a lot of driving through thick forests and the island is pretty big , too much to see , so it takes a little while to get to sights, but when I went I done a two day tour which costs $350 / 400 I think, and you get your meals included, other transport I saw were 4WD jeeps, it's either them or the 4WD tour Coach's to get about in as there are no proper roads, it's just all sand, but of course try and look about you could find something cheaper to get you to lake mckenzie
