the museum and trench area are close together. The museum is definitely worth a visit. I'd allow an 1-2 hours total depending on the level of subject matter interest you have. I can't imagine many 7 year olds enjoying the museum displays, and depending on the particular 10 year old, the museum may hold little interest.
Is there any information about the cemetery across the road available in the museum or the cafe?

Have been to Ypres a couple of weeks ago. and saw my great uncle's grave. On the CWGC web site there were 3 concentration documents associated with the grave. By the Menin gate there is a CWGC office and I asked what these meant. I had a reply when i got home I had a reply explaining where he had originally been buried and how he got to Hooge Crater. They even gave me a map reference for the original burial. i am so grateful, it was a great little break

An hour should be adequate to have a sanwich and a beer, tour the museum and adjacent trenches and take in the CWGC cemetery across the road. This is where you will see the 'crater' depicted as a circle in stone. June will be pretty busy, given the summer weather and I believe this attraction is open year round.
