You can't camp on the Gertrude Saddle. It's a day hike. Really only to be done in dry weather. Do the research. The nearest campsite is at Cascade Creek further towards Te Anau on the Milford Rd. Alternatively you could book a stay at the Milford Lodge. Maybe talk to someone at Department of Conservation. All the best.
What's the best time in the day to go in mid-February? I have to choose if hiking early morning before 2:45pm cruise or early afternoon after 9:45-11am cruise. Thank you!

EArly early morning if it is hot but the air is hazy. Early afternoon stronger Light and warmer.
