The castle is open during the summer months only. It's open daily, but seems to close for lunch most days. When we were there, lunch was 1-2pm. You can wander round the grounds while it's closed though. There are picnic benches and good views of the River Tay.

There are definitely buses from perth centre to road end but it is 3 miles from there. Could be a nice walk there - downhill mainly. Then taxi back to Perth.
