Yes you can walk to the thermals, really an amazing hike! Highly recommend it. You need to get there early for parking and its nice to have the trail to yourself. It got hot for us, but we were coming down by then so it wasn't a big deal. Only one section past the first lake that we had mosquitoes, maybe 25 minutes. No brainer, try on a nice day, photos are amazing all the way up.
