Today this once thriving mining camp is visited by tourists who continue to travel to Bodie from all over the world, just as they did back in Bodie's boom years.

The first part is tarmac normal road the last 2 miles is dirt track but flattened with the odd bump or pit hole that was easy to swerve.... it really wasn’t a problem and this may sound silly but it built up the anticipation and authenticity of it in a way.... don’t let it stop you
What is the hazardous area that's closed to public??

This was a mining town, so I suspect you’re talking about the mines. These are on a hillside near the town, not accessible to visitors. In any case Bodie is well worth visiting.
Are there any tour groups that give tours of Bodie? Really just trying to avoid taking a rental car over the dirt road.

A bit delayed, when we were there they had a special day with tours. As well there are separate tours for the mining complex (which is not otherwise accessible). I think all of them need to be prebooked and the mining one seems to be rather rare. But please check on that with the Park. The dirt road (we went in August) was absolutely no problem, don't understand the worry of some of the reviewers. Easy ride, take your time that's all - there far bigger potholes on most Interstates here on the Eastcoast.
